Lorry Drivers Urged to Come Forward to Help Fatal Crash Investigation

Date: 20th December 2007

North Yorkshire Police are appealing for two lorry drivers to come forward who may have witnessed the lead up to a fatal collision on the A1 last month.

The collision between the blue Scania curtain sided articulated lorry and a white Ford Connect van happened at about 5.50am on Monday 26th November 2007. The accident happened on the northbound A1 at Hackforth, which is two miles north of Leeming.

The driver of the van, Christopher Charles Carter, aged 43, of Carr House Road, Doncaster, received serious injuries and later died at the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton.

The 43 year old driver of the Scania goods vehicle, who is from Lincoln was arrested in connection with the death. He is currently on police bail pending further enquiries.

Traffic Constable Tracy Smales of the Harrogate Road Policing Group, explained that the Scania goods vehicle was attempting to cross from the northbound carriageway onto the southbound carriage way when the collision occurred.

She said “From our enquiries so far, we understand that two lorries were travelling on the southbound carriageway of the A1 and drove past the Scania goods vehicle at about 5.45am as it was attempting to cross the central reservation.

“If these particular lorry drivers can remember being on the road at that same time and can recall the manner in which the Scania vehicle was being driven, then I urge them to get in touch with the police as soon as possible.”

Witnesses should contact Traffic Constable Tracy Smales at the Harrogate Road Policing Group office on 0845 6060 247 or via e-mail tracy.smales@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk
